Right now...Phoebe and I are finishing a 20-inch clay model based on one of the vase paintings, and that's been fun... getting to look at and try to replicate this painting, but in 3-dimensions. It's interesting trying to figure out how to translate that and getting to finally build something that's a little larger.
On the vase paintings, the depictions of the horses are very stylized. They're not really naturalistic, and they're very flat, 2-dimensional...Most of the horses that at first glance look like just one horse in profile is actually two horses and you can tell because the head is often split in two and what appears to be the four legs of one horse is often eight legs...There's a lot of ways that they condense information…
